Modernizing 15-Year-Old ASP.NET Systems to .NET 9/10 Without Downtime
Big-bang rewrites fail in 80% of legacy projects; incremental strangler facades succeed.
The battle-tested Strangler Fig pattern for migrating monolithic .NET Framework systems into high-speed .NET 9/10 microservices while keeping 24/7 business operations active.
Key Architectural Findings & Guidelines
§01. Why the "Big-Bang" Rewrite is an Enterprise Trap
Every enterprise modernization begins with an ambitious executive mandate: "Let us rebuild our 15-year-old ASP.NET monolith in Next.js and Go in 12 months." Two years later, the project is millions over budget, the legacy system has evolved with 200 new undocumented business rules, and cutover is repeatedly postponed due to fear of catastrophic data corruption.
The only predictable modernization strategy is the Strangler Fig pattern: placing a reverse proxy in front of the legacy monolith and peeling away vertical domain slices one route at a time.
§02. Reverse Proxy Facades with Microsoft YARP
Using Yet Another Reverse Proxy (YARP), we establish an intelligent routing gateway in front of IIS. All production traffic hits YARP. When a request matches an active modernized route (e.g., `/api/v2/orders`), YARP forwards it to the new containerized .NET 10 microservice. All unmigrated routes fall through to the legacy ASP.NET WebForms server.
This allows engineering teams to ship production code to real users on day 14 of an engagement, eliminating the 18-month "black box" deployment risk.
var builder = WebApplication.CreateBuilder(args);
builder.Services.AddReverseProxy()
.LoadFromConfig(builder.Configuration.GetSection("ReverseProxy"));
var app = builder.Build();
app.MapReverseProxy();
app.Run();
// appsettings.json excerpt:
// "Routes": {
// "modern-orders": { "ClusterId": "dotnet10-cluster", "Match": { "Path": "/api/orders/{**catch-all}" } },
// "legacy-fallback": { "ClusterId": "iis-legacy-cluster", "Match": { "Path": "{**catch-all}" } }
// }§03. Database Synchronization & Zero-Downtime Cutover
To decouple shared monolithic SQL Server schemas without service interruption, we employ Change Data Capture (CDC) and dual-write triggers. Both legacy and modern services write to staging tables with reconciliation logs. Once data parity is proven over 30 consecutive days, the legacy database connection strings are severed with zero downtime.

Client Impact & Success
Real feedback from engineering leaders, CTOs, and founders across 15+ years of production deployments.
“Vijay and the SHIVAM ITCS AI team didn't just execute the project - they elevated our entire platform. Their ability to architect complex multi-agent state machines, eliminate latency bottlenecks, enforce zero-hallucination guardrails, and create an intelligent multi-LLM orchestration layer was extraordinary. The final delivery was resilient, battle-tested, and far beyond expectations. One of the strongest AI systems engineering teams in the industry.”
